After a very short visit to celebrate her birthday, I drove my sister to the airport yesterday and cried as she flew back to Houston. Her birthday falls on Guatemala´s Independence Day and she chose to fly down to Guate to spend a long weekend with us. She arrived mid-day on Friday and after the inevitable rush hour that results from it being a Friday and "quincena" (Spanish for the fifteenth of each month when a large majority of the population in Guatemala receive their bi-weekly paychecks), we were off to Puerto San José.
We stopped for dinner and then continued on towards the all-inclusive resort my sister had booked for her birthday weekend stay. While driving speedily through one of the many curves found on route to the beach (it was around 8:30 p.m. on the poorly lit part of the highway), I noticed the front windshield was getting fogged up and told my husband to turn on the windshield wipers to clear it so he could see better. I need to point out that we took my car to the beach because it is an SUV and therefore accommodated us all better than my husband´s sedan. Well, let´s just say there is a reason why back-seat driving is so frowned upon. My husband went to turn on the wipes, but actually turned off the car´s headlights... his car´s lights are found on the right and wipes on the left and in my car they are vice-versa. My sister´s best friend was riding shot gun and exclaimed "THE LIGHTS!" and I am pretty sure all of us silently peed our pants after what seemed like the longest 3 seconds or so it took my husband to get the headlights back on while trying not to crash an SUV at high speeds in the pitch darkness on a lonely Guatemalan highway. YEAH! Just say no to back-seat driving!
Anyway, by the grace of God we made it to the resort safe and sound, if a bit weary and jumpy from the adrenaline rush we got from our near death experience. We all had a good nervous laugh about making it there safely and managed to fall asleep at about 10:45 p.m. I have to congratulate my husband and I for managing to successfully co-sleep with a wiggly toddler on a full sized bed that more closely resembled a twin size during the three nights of our stay. I am also really grateful for the all you can eat breakfast buffet included in the package because, coincidentally, our darling little toddler went through a huge growth spurt during the long-weekend and ate like a bottomless pit the entire time. All in all, it was a very pleasant mini-vacation and Hannah fell in love with my sister. I was surprised she was able to remember her from her last visit and our Skype video calls, but thankful because that meant no three-day long terribly awkward adjustment period. It was as though Marci was her long time BF and my sister had a blast with her as well teaching her some unseemly, albeit terribly cute, skills like how to flutter her lips. BTW, she is also solely responsible for teaching Hannah how to blow cherries via Skype. She likes to point out that she teaches Hannah these things, because "You and Tito (our brother´s nickname) will pay for all of the times you messed with me through your children... and your children´s children... muahahahah (evil movie laugh)".
We ate, slept, swam, ate and slept some more for 3 glorious days and nights. My sister and her BF drank Quetzalteca Indita Horchata Flavored mixed with Three Olives Loopy Vodka to their hearts desire and I made sure to stay hydrated what with all of sweating (my body was not meant to endure hot humid climates... or so says the girl who spent 13 years of her life in Houston, which I am pretty sure is one of the muggiest cities in Texas, one of the hottest states) and all of Hannah´s complimentary nursing. So it was all water and no alcohol for me, but Marci insisted I try some of her concoction, assuring me it was like drinking Froot Loops flavored milk. I took a tiny sip and NO my dear Marci, it tasted very much like STRONG liquor with a faint fruit-loops-milk aftertaste. One of the highlights was spending an entire day on a family bed by the beach eating Flamin´ Hot Cheetos (I love the stuff and you can´t find it here in Guate so my sister brought me a club pack in her luggage along with Flamin´ Hot Funyuns I didn´t even know existed... ohhh yeah, WHAT! WHAT!!) and listening to a great play-list my sister made especially for the trip while delighting in the ocean breeze.
I really wanted Hannah to go into the ocean so I walked her down to the shore, but the Pacific Ocean was so ferocious even the waves that reached the shore were scary enough to send me running back up to safer dry ground, lest my Hannah be dragged off into the sea by a strong undercurrent. OH NO-Sir-Ree-BOB, no ocean play for us... we limited our beach time to playing in the slightly moistened sand closer to the hotel´s pool area and that was good enough for both of us. Besides, my baby was all about the pool. She couldn´t get enough and woke up at the break of dawn everyday to get an early start, much to our chagrin. The up-side to her early rising was that there really wasn´t a lot to do at night except lie in bed in the wonderful AC because I swear the hotel was surrounded by swarms of blood-thirsty mosquitoes that all came out at dusk, so that meant we fell asleep pretty early.
Thank you Marci for choosing to spend your birthday down here with us, thank you for treating us to a great mini vacation and, even better, for playing photographer so we could remember the trip forever. Happy Birthday Marci, we love you and miss you so much already!
