Being the +Google junkie that I am, I went online and read up on sleep regressions, finding out it was normal for babies to go through them right before the main milestones. Sure enough, the day after her first crawl, we started to ease back into our regularly scheduled programming... in bed by 8 p.m., two night-time feedings (at 2 a.m. and then again at 4 a.m.), awake by 7:30 a.m. and two 1 1/2 hour naps during the day (one around 9 a.m. and one after lunch time). Well, it´s been a week since she crawled and today she´s gone back into regression... just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in... Geezus! So today I have spent most of the morning breastfeeding. I breastfed for 40 minutes trying to lull my baby into her morning nap...nothing! As soon as I unlatched from what I thought was a sleeping Hannah, it was like setting off an alarm and the moaning/crying/whining began. Mama has errands to run, so I gave up on the morning nap and went off to do my errands.
Back home and attempt no.2 at morning nap: 20 minutes of breastfeeding and her eyes began to close and her body started to relax. Yes! time to unlatch... nope, false alarm. 10 more minutes, okay, surely now she´s asleep, let´s try to unlatch... damn, wrong again! 15 more minutes and my left arm was starting to fall asleep so I thought, no enough is enough, mama´s gotta pee. I figured the unlatching using my finger strategy was probably to blame for waking her back up because she has a really strong latch-on. I remembered having read about another technique when Hannah started biting me while nursing, the pull-baby-into-your-breast trick so that she has to unlatch to breathe. I never tried it because I am always able to unlatch her with my little finger. Always and Never are strong words and sure enough today was the day my pinky didn´t succeed. Okay then Hannah, into the breast you go! I gently pressed her face into my breast and voila... no, she did not unlatch, rather she started to defiantly nurse and continue to breathe without any problems and all of this with her eyes closed as if to say "Ha! Did you think you were going to pull a fast one on me, now be a good mommy and stay where you are and keep comforting because I´m still sleepy".
Dang nammit! How I cursed the cute little perky nose I so recently gushed about that made it so easy for her to keep breathing despite being smothered by my breast! Tough noogies, didn´t I yearn for the challenges of motherhood!? So alas, I lay in bed for 15 more minutes and was eventually able to pry myself loose with my pinky finger from a FINALLY asleep Hannah. But alas, it´s after lunch and time for her afternoon nap... yes... nap, rather another inevitable marathon nursing session and all I can say is... there damn well better be another big milestone around the corner!
