Home Tiger Dad/Mom Give Me an "A"...

Give Me an "A"...

Jessica 2:24 PM 0

I can´t lie and say I don´t secretly wish I could be a Domestic Goddess. Now that I am a mother, it´s the next alluring glove for the hand that is my childhood issues and OCD. I think it is also one of the reasons I became engrossed in the show Mad Men, despite the overt chauvinistic/sexist themes and rampant smoking. Ugh! How I hate smoke and let´s face it, the show really is just one gigantic smoking ad. Anyway, I cut the show some slack because it has very interesting and strong female characters and I agree with this article that upon a closer examination, it´s actually one of the most feminist shows on TV. Don´t even get me started on how much, despite being about life in the US in the 60´s, it rings true to life in Guate in the 21st century.

Anyway, Betty Draper´s outfits make me long to discover my inner Domestic Goddess... at least until one of the many scenes that remind me that that b*$(% is Craazzyy repressed, bitter and full of pent up frustrations. Though really I admire women who have all of the skill sets required to be a true Domestic Goddess... all on their own. I have made attempts, but have quickly discovered I lack several important abilities like a steady hand, hand-eye coordination, creativity when it comes to crafts and decoration, etc. I am also over my quest for perfection in all aspects of life, so I am very content to be inspired by these women and their brilliant tips, projects, and crafts but strive to make my version of these as best as I can with the tools I have. Cleaning and Cooking, yes but only because my Tiger Parents made sure I got these skills down to a science. Baking... yeah I just recently got this one down (and I was surprised by that one), the exception: Cake Pops. Let me tell you those little cake balls are HARD and I don´t even think that word is enough to fully express how challenging it was because some people are so skilled they make it look deceivingly simple. My friends and I recently attempted churning out some cake pops of our own and this was the best we were able to muster:

I know... not very impressive hahahaha! Oh well! Hannah can look back at this photo and know that everyone eventually fails at something and that´s okay. I like this Albert Einstein quote "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new". Life Lesson: Don´t take yourself or life too seriously, it´s okay to make mistakes and there is no better remedy for embarrassment than Laughing and Shaking it off. In our case, the decoration was bad but the pops tasted great (the kids loved them), we had some great laughs during the 5 hours it took 3 of us to put these poor excuse for cake pops together and it was a fun experience we got to share that we won´t soon forget! Next skill I want to take a crack at... sewing. On one amazing domestic goddess´s site I was inspired to make fabric blocks for Hannah out of her old flannel sheets. I thought it would be a great way to keep a memoir from her baby days in the form of toys she can play with and keep forever. I also want to sew onto these the following letters "Hannah ❤s Mama" because that is a little song I always sing to her to make her smile "Hannah loves mama...Mama loves Hannah...si si si si si". With blocks it´s also easy to just change the placing of them to spell out both phrases. So I only need 12 and I got one block down yesterday... an "A" (hence, this blog´s title... had to explain that in case it only made sense to me), that means 11 more to go.

I figure it will take me about a day per block (since I can only work in snippets of "free" time) and then another couple of days to do the final seams to give the blocks structure. BTW, I will be sacrificing a stuffed animal for the greater good because I don´t want to have to go on a city wide tour in search of polyester toy filling. Who is gonna get his final cut? Barney! We have 5 really big stuffed animals: My Scott puppy from my days working at KC, a huge Nemo (you gotta love that movie!), a gorgeous big-eyed Elmo (yes, I love Elmo so much that I was one of the kids who made her parents search high and low for a tickle me Elmo back in the day), a big Pooh Bear wearing a raincoat, boots and hat, and Barney. Of course the first four couldn´t go, emotional value and cuteness and all, but Barney... ehhh, I never really liked that show. Sorry Barney, but your demise is for a good cause.

My goal: to finish the blocks and give them to Hannah for her first birthday which is on June 27. I have plenty of time, so we´ll see how this goes. Hopefully they won´t turn out like our cake pops. Wish me luck!
