27 Dresses and No Cuchubales...

Jessica 3:16 PM 0

What in the world is this crazy chapina (people from guate are referred to as Chapines) talking about? Well, remember the movie 27 dresses? I really liked it, even though it was a corny romantic chick-flick about a girl who was always a bridesmaid and never a bride, hence the 27 bridesmaid dresses. May my darling Hannah find a man worthy of her, who will love her unconditionally and care for her always, but I digress... the point is that we now have a closet that looks a lot like Jane´s closet did in this movie.

My mother loves buying things for my little darling, and I can´t complain. My sister on the other hand can because she was the one who had to carry 2 huge suitcases filled with presents for Hannah from her grandmommy, and then had to find a way to get through customs without having all of said luggage checked for taxable items. Where did she pack her things you ask? Yep, that´s right, her carry-on was the only precious suitcase my mom did not get her hands on / or rather elbow-deep in packing things for baby. Sucks for my sister (the greatest aunt ever, Love you Marci!), great for my baby! The spoils: tons and tons and tons... and did I mention tons of fancy, gorgeous dresses and outfits. The only problem is I have no cuchubales for her to wear them to!

Cuchubales are a tradition here in Guate where a group of women get together once a month and each contribute an agreed upon amount of money to the "pot" that is then given to the member whose month it is to receive the takings. It`s basically a social gathering disguised as a way to save money. I used to have a general perception that it was only for wealthy women who had a lot of time on their hands, but I´ve come to realize that most women I know, or associate with in some way, belong to a cuchubal. Most of them except for me :( and I am okay with not being a social butterfly, but now what am I supposed to do with all of those fabulous dresses?

I jokingly said to my BF that Hannah was going to have to get used to running errands in dresses, but really people, I think it may just come to that. So if you see me in a grocery store wearing jeans and a casual shirt with my hair up in a hair clip carrying a bright eyed girl, looking very uncomfortable in a layered party dress... please don´t judge me `cause now you know the reason why!
