Well okay, granted today I feel better, but yesterday was a whole other story...
It all began when I was two... jajaja (I always forget in English it´s hahaha, but in spanish it´s jajaja though really I think you get it)... so yeah, just kidding I´ll go into my life story another time. Tuesday was my play date with my gal pals because mama´s gotta have some adult conversation time, even if only once or twice a week, and I am on a personal quest to find the best hamburger in Guate. Don´t ask me why, I just am! I have tried several but have yet to come across one that really hits the junk food heaven spot. Hard Rock Cafe´s burger is the only one that has gotten close, and yes, as of two or so months ago we now have a Hard Rock Cafe in Guate as well.
One of my friends suggested I try the hamburgers at Del Puente which is a business that sells buns, meat, etc. in supermarket stores but opened several small restaurants to get people hooked on their burgers, which was apparently a good idea because they seem to be very well known. Obviously not known by me since, despite my current quest, I hardly ever crave meat burgers. Don´t get me wrong, I loves me my junk food, but usually it includes chicken. My friends and I decided to stir things up a bit and change our routine outing to go to the small shopping center where one of the Del Puente joints is at. In that same shopping center there is a baking shop that sells all kinds of goodies for baking so my BF and I decided to kill some time there while waiting for our friend (the one who suggested said burgers). I love specialty shops like that one and the knitting shop near it because they make me want to learn new skills, take up new hobbies. My newest one: cake pops and, thanks to my sister, I now have an entire kit and tons of goodies to try out.
Okay, so back to my story. Our friend was running late due to traffic so we sat down at another restaurant for coffee and, as we were leaving, thought to use the bathroom there because the burger joint is so small we assumed they´d have no bathroom. So on we went to the burger joint and as we were buying our burgers we noticed the "Out of Order" sign on their tiny bathroom door. I laughed and told my friend how I had been right about using the bathroom in the other place and thought nothing more of it. If only I`d have taken that sign as a "sign". Life lesson: never eat at a joint that has an "Out of Order" sign on their ONLY tiny bathroom. It should have sent me running for the hills because in a tiny place with no working bathroom you have to wonder: do they have running water? where is the chef going to the bathroom and is he washing his hands? is someone who works there so sick they clogged the toilet? if they haven´t fixed the only bathroom in that place by 6 p.m. that day, what did their kitchen look like? Can someone say E-coli?!
I´ll admit to liking the burger, but it was sooo not worth it! I don´t remember having been as sick as I was from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. today in years. By goly was I smacked and tackled by a mutant stomach bug! My husband`s concern around 2 a.m. Tuesday night was if I should be breastfeeding Hannah. My answer: Alucema and Anis. Those are just two of the many herbs used frequently by Mayan midwives to help cleanse your system and, among other things, help prevent or relieve colick in babies. Well, they have become my must haves and go to faves whenever I start to feel under the weather since I refuse to take medicine while breastfeeding, and these past two days were no exception (even if I did feel like I was dying). I downed an entire pot of Alucema and Anis tea and breastfed in between trips to the bathroom without worries (TMI?). This tea is just an added precaution, but let the record show that I too read Kellymom and know the best thing to do when you are sick is to breastfeed so baby can get all your antibody goodness making baby more immune to whatever ails you.
So yeah, no more burger quest for me, I am sorry tummy!
